Chef Biography

Gert Sørensen was born in Hillerod, Denmark, and once out of school he began apprenticing in Hillerod in 1952.  After graduating in 1956, and receiving his certificate in chocolate, he started working up the kitchen ladder at the Hotel d’Angleterre in Copenhagen.  From 1960 to 1981, he worked in the Savoy Hotel in London, and the Atlantic Hotel in Hamburg, Germany before returning to Copenhagen’s Tivoli Gardens in 1982 as executive pastry chef. He then left the Tivoli in 1996 to serve as the Queen’s Pastry Chef and Chocolatier, and at the time, produced the world’s largest wedding cake.

In 2001, the Great Chefs team caught up with Chef Sørensen, to tape him preparing a dish for the Discovery Channel’s Great Chefs of the World television series (episode # 254).

Chef Sørensen was known as one of Denmark’s most talented chocolatiers and at the time of his passing, he was the Grand Ambassador of the Federation Cuisiner Exclusive d’Europe’s Danish division.
